Save The Date Wedding Expo
Sunday 18th January 2015
In the Cairns region there are two wedding expos coming up in the first quarter of 2015 and the first one is the Save The Date Wedding Expo on Sunday 18th January 2015.
This is the fifth annual Save The Date wedding expo to be held at the Brothers Leagues Club in Cairns and couples are encouraged to attend and meet some of the local wedding suppliers.
The wedding expo begins at 10.00am until 3.00pm and there will be around 130 wedding specialists that you can meet and discuss your very specific wedding requirements.
Please note that the majority of the funds raised at this wedding expo will be going to a nominated Cairns charity so we actively encourage as many couples to attend this event so our local community can benefit from your happy occasion also.
NQ Wedding Expo
Sunday 22nd February 2015
This wedding expo is the 22nd Wedding & Formal Expo to be held in Cairns which is organised by Danielle Fischer of Events NQ
This is a particularly large wedding expo and it is being held at the Cairns Convention Centre as this venue provides a lot of space for booth set ups and for guests to get around comfortably.
There will be over 150 wedding exhibitors at the NQ Wedding & Formal Expo and they expect over 3,000 attendees for this one day event which begins at 9.00am and closes at 5.00pm

There will be fashion parades and lots of prize giveaways and you can talk directly to professional make-up artists, photographers, wedding cake artists and you can even see the girls from Register Your Wedding.

In September this year Register Your Wedding held their quarterly wedding networking event at the Cairns Hilton Hotel (click here for more info on September’s Wedding Networking evening) and we saw over 100 of the Cairns Wedding Suppliers turn up for a bit of fun and education.
At each one of these networking evenings we like to invite a few local wedding suppliers and an industry professional that can offer some advice or educate all of us about their business. These evenings enable everyone in the local wedding industry to network and get to know each other and get to know each other’s businesses and in turn they can then give more qualified advice to couples on who they would recommend they contact for specific wedding services should they be asked the question.
Cairns City Council Charges to Hold Weddings on Cairns Beaches, Parks and Gardens
This networking event at the Hilton Hotel Cairns was a very important meeting for the industry as the Cairns City Council has this year come out with special permits that wedding suppliers and couples have to apply for and pay for if they wish to marry or be married in any public space in the City of Cairns, Cairns beaches and the parks and gardens around the Cairns City region.
Not all of these weddings do get the permission to have their nuptials in the location of their desire due to the period of time it takes to process the permits, weather issues and last minute changes, other couples booking the same region for a similar time and all sorts of other reasons.
Cairns is recognised as one of the top three destination wedding venues in Australia and these new council regulations have really started to hurt an already suffering industry and it is now pushing our Melbourne and Sydney couples to hold their weddings in Bali, Thailand, Fiji, Vanuatu and lots of other idealic tropical places that have no such permits or fees to hold wedding on public beaches and in public parks and public spaces. The restrictions on the things you can and cannot do at your destination wedding in Cairns and Tropical North Queensland have become a big topic amongst couples we see and other wedding suppliers see at Wedding Expos down south.
Cairns City Council Parks and Garden Councillors Invited To Attend Wedding Networking Forum
Brett Spencer and his assistant Patricia were invited along to talk to all of the wedding suppliers and clear up some of the permit and licencing questions and to discuss what the fees are actually for and what they actually give the couple and the wedding suppliers.
Prior to this event Register Your Wedding suggested to our attendees to write down the questions they had so they could ask Brett and Patricia on the evening the detailed specifics. On the night Christina introduced Councillor Brett and he got up on the podium and spoke eloquently about the reasons the Cairns City Council feels they need to control the number of weddings in public areas within the city of Cairns and the Cairns northern beaches and then it was question and answer time for the wedding supplier attendees.
And the Cairns Wedding Industry Suppliers Became Feisty
Wedding photographers, wedding celebrants, wedding caterers and outdoor wedding planners had lots of questions for Brett. The whole topic of outdoor wedding permits and fees and licences became very heated on both sides so Christina from Register Your Wedding had to cut short the Q & A to save Brett and Patricia from further comments and get him down off the podium.
Christina then arranged in private with Brett and Patricia to have everyone that has a concern about these council regulations to send them to the team at Register Your Wedding so we could collate them on behalf of the wedding suppliers in bullet point form and then make an appointment and sit with Brett in his office and go thru each one.
We relayed this message back to the wedding supplier attendees and asked that they send all of their questions and comments to Melanie and Sophie at Register Your Wedding and that we will submit them to Council on their behalf and relay the response back at the next event in 2014.

Christina also asked Brett and Patricia if they would be able to attend our next event so they can respond directly to all of the co-ordinated questions we had gathered for them and Brett had kindly agreed to do so.
Things Have Now Changed The Councillor Has Gone
Brett Spencer is no longer the Manager of Parks and gardens so Christina has been speaking with the Deputy Mayor Terry James about the problems and concerns that everyone in the wedding industry has about these new complicated licences and permits and he has said that he would very much like to attend and take a look at all of the questions we have collated from the wedding suppliers so he may pass it onto the new person responsible and so that he can also attend and respond along with addressing it with our Mayor Bob Manning.
Deputy Mayor Terry said he is concerned these regulations are stopping couples from choosing Cairns as a wedding destination as it hurts many other businesses along the way. The Cairns and Tropical North Queensland wedding industry has been calculated to be worth over $95 million dollars annually so it’s not a small bit of business we are worrying we are losing to other destinations Christina said when she was talking to the Deputy Mayor.
Register Your Wedding Is Very Busy
At the last Cairns and Tropical North Queensland wedding industry function we held at the Angsana Resort and Spa in December we advised the 90 or so attendees that we had collated all of their questions and that we had been speaking with the Deputy Mayor because Brett Spencer was no longer responsible for the permits.
We advised everyone we would be handing these over to MOD Films, Wed In Paradise and Angelique so they can pursue and represent everyone at any meetings they would like to set up with Deputy Mayor Terry James as we could no longer spare the time to do this ourselves as Register Your Wedding has some big expansion plans for 2014.
At the time Christina also advised everyone that we could no longer co-ordinate any more wedding industry events for 2014 again due to the upcoming plans we have going into 2014.
We have sent an email advising the above mentioned persons the contact details for Deputy Mayor Terry James and we have also included the questions that were collated on behalf of the Cairns and region wedding suppliers so they may take it from here should they wish to do so.
We also have here in our blog for all of you to see for yourselves the questions all of your peers had sent to us to submit to the Cairns City Council on your behalf.
We urge you all to pursue your meeting with the council and see if you can make it work for our wedding couples, yourselves and the requirements of our city council.

There were around 100 attendees and on the night they raised around $200 for the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre on Fitzroy Island.
This was an extra special event as the whole industry had been talking about the onerous council permits and licences that are required if you wish to be married in a public place within the boundaries of Cairns City.
We sent an invitation to Brett Spencer who headed up Cairns Parks and Gardens as the Manager and he kindly accepted and came to the event with his assistant Patricia as our guest speakers. Brett addressed the wedding suppliers on the councils wedding permits and then the wedding suppliers asked questions of the councillors. You can read more about the evening here.
Cairns Wedding Suppliers Questions To Cairns City Council
We have set down below a list of all the questions that we had collated over a number of weeks after this event so that they could be submitted to the Cairns City Council on behalf of the wedding industry in a more formal and organised meeting.
Please read here all of the questions the wedding suppliers of Cairns wrote for submission to the Cairns City Council.
Questions to the Council:
- Please explain how and why the council has come up with these permits?
- Please explain Councils Business model and who came up with it and please explain why?
- Please show us a profit and loss on the so called business model if in fact council actually has one?
- Has the council even thought of the ramifications of all this nonsense ie potential upset and or violence when enforcing permits and moving on sunbakers or families enjoying picnics in our permits specific location?
- What is the council doing with the revenue they raise from this impost?
- These are public assets paid for by us local ratepayers and we have every right to use these public assets and take photographs
- Is the council going to recruit staff to police websites and facebook and Instagram and kik and all other social media of today and in the future of local photographers and interstate and overseas photographers for any images of Cairns parks and beaches now and if so how many new staff will you need and how much is it going to cost us ratepayers to pay these website trawlers ?
- Will the Cairns City Council allocate this big brother job to the people they have sent to Port Douglas that are now out of a job?
- Council needs to explain to ratepayers how they are going to manage and police all of this idiocracy
- Is Cairns City Council aware of our declining destination wedding business into Cairns and surrounding regions?
- Is Cairns City Council aware we are losing weddings to destinations like Bali, Fiji, Thailand, New Zealand and Vanuatu because of our rules and regulations and costs?
- Please explain how these council permits are going to attract more destination weddings to the Cairns region?
- Please explain why this is a good decision by council to apply permits for weddings in public areas?
- What other councils in Australia or anywhere else in the world have instituted permit fees such as the ones they are making us pay? Have they had success in attracting more weddings because of the permits?
- Why can’t we hire the space at the front of Angsana Resort & Spa/Far Horizons? Why is it off limits to other couples?
- Why should couples eloping pay the same price permit as those who have a group of guests? There should be an individual price for couples eloping.
- Why isn’t Palm Cove’s beach wedding structure better? Instead of 4 hour blocks could we make it 2 hour blocks? It will generate more weddings in our region.
- The council has mentioned that they will cordon off sections for weddings and move on sunbakers and beach goers. Why have we not ever seen a section cordoned off as yet?
- Who approves the wedding permit for the decking next to the Salt House?
- Wedding celebrants are rate payers so why can’t we utilize the grass areas out the front of Angsana if there is no wedding scheduled in the Angsana Chapel
- Please define a ‘Low Impact’ wedding ceremony?
- Where do we stand as a supplier when we have a permit? Can we or not move people along when we have a permit? Can we please have clarification on what we can and can’t do?
- In regards to other businesses setting up on the beach, what are the rules here? How do permits cross over?
- Why do photographers have to pay as much as a TV commercial crew?
- Why aren’t the council prepared to have a phone on weekends to help police the outdoor areas? Why aren’t they working on the weekends? We follow the rules and purchase a permit every time and then have to do the council’s work by moving people on (and other wedding suppliers who do not obtain the permit) How do you police this?
- I would like to know if the Cairns City Council can consider doing direct deposit or have credit cards facilities for bookings? A number of my couples are from down south or overseas and it is rather difficult for them to get the time to send through a bank cheque. Most of the time we end up having to do is: the couples forward the funds to me and I go to Cairns City Council to make the payment.
- Botanical Gardens
- 1 hour set up is not enough time. It is only a 15-20 minute window as guests arrive 30 minutes early to weddings. Setting up while guests start arriving looks bad. No wow factor.
- Auditorium is in full sun. Can we have shade cloths?
- Can we park in Goodwin Street? Can we have access to the side gate? (up the hill wedding)
- Why do we have to be out of the garden’s by 4:00pm? the Botanical Gardens shut at 5:00pm
- Bumping out – not enough time
- Wangetti – rubbish bins are dreadful. Can there be new bins introduced?
- Little Cove – 8 chairs only. Why?
- What are the differences between film and photography? What are the permits different?
- Why can’t we have yearly permits?
- On the night I spoke to the lady from the Cairns City Council, and she indicated that as a Videographer I would need a permit to shoot a function on council land, separate from the other parties involved. Is this true?We were told that there is a fee of $70.00 for the use of the council land for a small event such as a wedding. The question was “Who has to pay this fee? The wedding organiser? The couple? The celebrant? The photographer or the videographer?Well the answer came back as all FIVE. Yes that is what I was told by Brett’s council colleagues on the night.Why do ALL have to pay and how are they going to enforce this? (…oh I thought the bride paid it? No, i thought the photographer paid it etc…). The photographer rings the council and pays for the “plot” of land to use for the wedding and then the celebrant rings the council to be told no that’s already taken you will have to go elsewhere.Does this fee also stand for the photographer and videographer when they do a location shoot anywhere else away from the original ceremony area? And again is it a fee that has to be paid by all involved (Photographer, Videographer, Bride & Groom) for every location we go on the day? Admittedly I was told that the council were going to look into this but I would like Brett to make a formal comment on this issue
- What are the new licencing/permits that are now required for public parks and beaches? Please describe them. What is to be done to get an approval? What is the cost?
- How many chairs are allowed on the sand area on the beach off the Palm Cove Jetty end? Same question for the sandy beach area at the front of Aloha & Villa Paradiso?
- Can you please confirm if there is a secondary application we should be lodging as well as the current one online as there is only one form to download onb the Cairns Council website?
- Can temporary structures such as an arbour be erected on the Jetty end, out the front of Aloha & Villa Paradiso? Please confirm the cost to access the public power boxes and the most direct way to obtain a key to these?
- At most beach ceremonies, a portable PA system is used to play anywhere between 1 to 5 songs during the ceremony. As this is amplified music, is this likely to be rejected upon consideration?
- What systems does the Cairns City Council have in place to eliminate or decrease double bookings?
- May you please confirm capacity limitations for the beach area in front of Aloha & Villa Paradiso as well as Angsana Resort & Spa/Far Horizons?
- My question would be: does the Cairns City Council differentiate between large groups and small intimate groups? If I have a wedding which is only, for instance, 9 guests including the bride and groom, do they need a permit? If so, are they to be charged the booking fee as well even though it is a small group? For a large wedding of perhaps 100 guests I could understand the need to book and pay for covering cleaning fees etc… I also understand the requirement to book ahead of time, just in case there is another wedding in the same location, but the fee is really my query?
- Thank you for giving us the opportunity once more to address the Cairns Regional Council re: issuing permits for beach frontage and parks in regards to wedding ceremony usage.
Patricia Andrews did address the celebrants earlier this year at a meeting, which was very much appreciated, and addressed some of the issues raised at question time.
It would be appreciated by all involved with weddings in Palm Cove, celebrants, suppliers and couples, if the Cairns Regional Council could rectify/amend the policy of the present restricted booking procedure that is in place near sweet Creek mouth of Palm Cove on the lawn foreshore. This area epitomizes the ‘tropical beach wedding’ most couples envisage as a romantic quiet spot to exchange their vows. The public should have the opportunity to share this space. There should also be a policy of equity in the payment of permits for use of designated areas.
A couple of points:
Palm Cove:
There should be a ‘first in, first served’ policy in hiring beachfront locations on public lands.
All persons/entities hiring a public area to pay the same fee. There should be no exclusions.
On the 29th January 2013, an email was sent to me indicating that the Council would be ‘taking bookings for the area adjacent to the Angsana Resort & Spa from the 1st march 2013 on a ‘first in, first served’ basis. This has not occurred.
A more concise explanation should be available re: any zoning or re-zoning of public land that may have been done.
The public should be informed of the reason for a company having exclusive use of public land.

There is a COPYRIGHT on the map so I dare not to attach it. This map shows the definite Property Boundary, Road Reserve and High Water limit. It is important that this mpa is exhibited for discussion at any meeting.
1 Hour Permit:
1 hour booking at the Botanic Gardens to be extended please to allow reasonable time for setup, ceremony, congratulations, photos and pack up time.
In spite of Council stating that beach permits are for 2 hours, in June (11/06/2013) I had a ceremony that only had 1 hour allocated on the beach at Clifton Beach. Copy available.
Cairns Harbourside Area:
Clarification of just what areas around the Salthouse near the Pier are controlled by (a) Port Authority and (b) Cairns Regional Council.

December 5, 2013 10:31 AMTonight is the night all of the Cairns and Tropical North Queensland wedding suppliers get together to celebrate another great year gone by and mingle and talk about all of the lovely couples they have married and helped to plan their dream wedding in beautiful North Queensland.
The theme funny enough is Black and White not really sure how we came up with this colour scheme for Christmas but it sure makes it easy for everyone to dress in the theme as we all have those colours in our wardrobes.
We have had 70 RSVP”s so it is sure to be a fun night for everyone to get together and relax. Today’s weather in Palm Cove is at it’s most picture perfect so it will be nice to celebrate in the warm weather on the beach under the Palm trees at Angsana Resort and Spa.
On that note we would like to thank our host General Manager Nicholas Mason and Wedding Co-Ordinator Angie Schesser for providing tonights venue and for supporting our wedding industry networking events your support is greatly appreciated.

Wedding suppliers and couples need to know the facts…
The Cairns Regional Council is now responsible for issuing permits in regards to wedding ceremonies and receptions held on a beach in the Cairns area.
The beach area is defined by the ‘area from the top of the beach right down to the spring low tide mark’.
This rule applies for all beaches between Bundaberg and the tip of Australia at Cape York.
If you are planning on having your wedding on a Cairns beach you need to apply for a permit.
To apply for a permit click here.
If you are planning on having a wedding on an island or a coral cay, then the ‘Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service’ is the body to contact to obtain a permit.

If you are a business you need to visit www.business.gld.gov.au.
If you intend to have a ‘Low Impact Wedding Ceremony’ on a beach, the good news is you don’t need a permit at all. For more information on what criterias make up a ‘Low Impact Wedding Ceremony’ please visit www.nprsr.gld.gov.au

September 25, 2013 2:07 PM‘Mod Films’, ‘Wed In Paradise’, ‘Angsana Resort & Spa Great Barrier Reef’ and ‘Register Your Wedding’ join forces again to unite the Far North Queensland wedding industry!
This is the third event of its kind this year and each one of them proving to be more successful than the previous one.
Wednesday’s function saw 100 wedding professionals discuss their business, and share their knowledge & experience.
Wedding suppliers have been very busy over the last few months, as we are in peak wedding season so this was also a good opportunity for all of us to catch up.
Yesterday’s venue was generously supplied by the Hilton Cairns. We were served a welcome drink on the ‘6 Degrees Terrace’ where the function took place as well as some fantastic canapés. The ‘6 Degree Terrace’ overlooks the Cairns Inlet and is a perfect wedding venue.
Gold coins donations were collected on behalf of the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre on Fitzroy Island as a way to give back to our wonderful environment.
The focus of the evening was ‘Flowers and Cakes’. We welcomed Rachel from Blush Floral and James from Cairns Wedding Cakes as speakers. Rachel and James know their business so well, no questions were left unanswered. As part of his contribution to the event James made beautifully presented chocolate cupcakes topped with a gold leaf for everyone to take home as well as a four tiered box of cupcakes drawn as a prize. Rachel finished off her presentation by a traditional ‘throw of the wedding bouquet’.
Due to the recent changes to the council wedding regulations in regards to ceremonies held on public outdoor locations, we thought appropriate to invite Brett and Patricia from the Cairns Regional Council to update us with the latest changes.
The entertainment included dancers from ‘The Cultural Place’ as well as live music from ‘Russell Harris Entertainment’.
Some very generous industry partners have come forward and offered some great prizes to be drawn on the night:
- The Hilton Cairns – 1 night accommodation for two with breakfast
- Passions of Paradise – Reef trip to the Great Barrier Reef
- Cairns Wedding Cakes – 100 + Cupcakes
- The Cultural Place – Indigenous artwork and a restaurant voucher
The purpose of these events is to unite wedding industry partners to offer better services to engaged couples getting married in our beautiful Far North Queensland. Having ‘Event Focus’ and specialty speakers allows everyone within the industry to be aware of each other’s business therefore providing a better service.

The purpose of ‘Register Your Wedding’ is to assist couples with the planning of their special day.
Working closely with wedding industry partners enables us to achieve this goal.
‘Register Your Wedding’ as well as three other leading wedding suppliers in the Tropical North Queensland region have formed a ‘Wedding Group’ with the purpose of uniting suppliers therefore offering engaged couples a better service.
The businesses involved in the ‘Wedding Group’ are: ‘Mod Films’, ‘Wed in Paradise’, ‘Angsana Beachfront Resort & Spa’ and ‘Register Your Wedding’.
As part of our collaboration we organise regular ‘Wedding Networking Evening’. Our next event will be held on 18th September 2013.
So “Save the Date” – 18th September 2013 as this is going to be a very important evening for everyone involved in the wedding industry!
VIP Speaker
A member of the Cairns City Council will be present to update us all on the latest wedding regulations in regards to ceremonies held on the beach, in a public park… etc.
Event Focus
Every networking evening focusses on an industry segment. The next event’s focus will be ‘Florists and Cake Makers’. Our guests speakers are from ‘Cairns Wedding Cakes’ & ‘Blush Floral’ and will be giving tips and hints that can be passed on to couples.
The idea of having ‘Event Focus’ and specialty speakers is to empower everyone within the industry about each other’s business. Any industry partners should have a broad knowledge of the local wedding arena.

‘The Cultural Place’ as well as ‘Russell Harris Entertainment’ will be performing on the night.

Paradise Palms Wedding Expo

There were over 50 local Cairns wedding suppliers displaying their amazing work for newly engaged couples, the evening also included 3 fashion parades and a fantastic fire work display by ‘A Bright Nite Fireworks’… Even a surprise proposal.

Some fantastic prizes were drawn at the end of the event. The major prize was given by Paradise Palms Resort & Country Club, the package included: 3 nights accommodation with breakfast, a dinner for two with a bottle of sparkling wine as well as 2 rounds of 18 holes golf with golf cart and club hire. ‘A Bright Nite Fireworks’ gave away $1,000 worth of fireworks which is always a great addition to any special event… especially at a wedding. Fitzroy Island Resort gave away 2 nights accommodation in one of their beautiful ocean suite, with breakfast and transfers. Last but not least ‘Raging Thunder Adventures’ gave away a 30 minutes balloon flight over the magnificent Atherton Tablelands, now that’s romantic!
Wedding expos, such as the one held last night at Paradise Palms Resort & Country Club, are a great way to plan your wedding with all the wedding suppliers under one roof: celebrants, entertainers, florists, cake makers, theming company, invitations, photographers, videographers, hairdressers, dresses, shoes, well being, jewelers, transports, fitness, travel and planners and other service providers such as babysitting.
